Also known as Insectoboticus maximus, this lace-winged robot insect can be found flying around the junk yard searching for prey. They have extremely large eyes and a long slender abdomen. With their large mandibles they can chew quickly, easily, and while on the move. Their favorite food consists of rusty pieces of scrap metal, old batteries and junk car parts. Their role in the ecosystem is an important one, for they are efficient recyclers of our discarded old junk. And, their detritus can be a healthful tasty snack when a good recipe is followed. *See recipe below.

Calling Gigundo Bot very large would be an understatement. He is a walloping, tremendous, super-colossal monster robot. Just the sight of his massive figure causes panic in the streets. In the right hands, he can be an invaluable asset to heads of governments and superpowers. When things get out of control they call on Gigundo Bot. He solves the really big problems. If a dictator in a foreign land mistreats his own people and threatens neighboring countries, the people call on Gigundo Bot. If an oil spill is spreading out of control putting delicate ecosystems at risk, they call on Gigundo Bot. If elected officials protect the super rich and hold the country hostage instead of doing the right thing for average citizens, Gigundo Bot is the one they call on.

You go Gigundo Bot!

F is for Flying Drone-Bot

You are walking down the street minding your own business. You have an uncanny feeling of being watched. You look around but there is no one. You pick up your pace but now you have a small spot on your back that feels like it’s burning. You try to rub it off but instead it gets worse. Then as the sun shines through the clouds you see a large bird-like shadow being cast on the sidewalk. You tilt your head upwards, having to shield your eyes from the brightness of the sun, and then you see it. You stop dead in your tracks, for hovering above you with a laser pinpointed right between your eyes, is the silent Flying Drone-Bot. It takes your breath away for a moment then you remember hearing that if you ever looked up and saw one, it would be the last thing you ever saw.

E is for Eensy-Weensy bot

The Eensy-Weesy bot is so efficient, pipes that haven’t been clear in years will be clean as a whistle in no time. Come on now, Eensy-Weensy bot, there’s a problem in the bathroom…then Grandma is next!

What’s this on the rug Dogbot? No, Dogbot, No! It’s back to the scrap metal pile for you!

C is for Cagebot

Here is installation number three in the Alphabots challenge of a robot for every letter of the alphabet. I recommend that you visit Alphabots to see the creative work being done over there.

Meet Cagebot. He’s feeling a little low and a bit fed up right now. The birds make fun of him all day long and taunt him with their chirps and tweets. He knows it’s because they’re free to fly, while he has to look at life through the bars of a cage. He’s tried to join in with their singing, but it just comes out like a rusty squeak.

The Cagebot sings
with fearful trill
of the things unknown
but longed for still
and his tune is heard
on the distant hill
for the Cagebot sings of freedom.

It’s sacrilegious, I know, to make fun of the great Maya Angelou’s sacred poem. I feel just terrible about it.

B is for Bulbot

Here is my second installation into the Alphabots challenge, a robot for every letter of the alphabet. Two down and twenty four to go!

The Bulbot’s phosphorescence is really quite resplendent,

It radiates, illuminates and even scintillates.

Beware of Bulbot’s beaming actinic rays so incandescent,

For you he may dazzle, frazzle or incinerate.

A is for Acro-Bot

A is for Acro-Bot.

This little guy is very good at juggling and walking a tightrope at the same time. He has also been known to ride a unicycle while making a ham sandwich.

I have been dabbling in robot assemblages lately. When I came across the AlphaBots! challenge I thought it would be fun to participate.

This Acro-Bot was made from found objects with some pencil drawings and Photoshop effects.

Birdy it’s Cold Outside

The Robin

When up aloft I fly and fly,
I see in pools the shining sky,
And a happy bird am I, am I!
When I descend toward the brink,
I stand and look and stop and drink,
And bathe my wings, and chink, and prink.
When winter frost makes earth as steel,
I search and search but find no meal,
And most unhappy then I feel.
But when it lasts, And snows still fall,
I get to feel no grief at all,
For I turn to a cold, stiff feathery ball!

When I came across this sad little poem it reminded me of just how cold it has been lately. Everything is frozen solid and decorated with pointy stalactite icicles. It snowed the other night, and the below freezing temperatures made the snow flakes sparkle like glitter.

Thomas Hardy was a Victorian era novelist and poet. Though the poor subject of this poem meets an unfortunate end, many of his poems display a love of the natural world. All of his life he held a firm stance against cruelty to animals.

When Hardy died there was a controversy as to where his remains should be interred. His family wanted him to be buried with his wife, but his executor insisted he be buried at the famous Poets’ Corner at Westminster Abbey. A compromise was reached when it was decided that his ashes would rest at Poets’ Corner and his heart would be buried with his wife. It was rumored that a cat got into the tin containing the heart and ate a portion of it before they had a chance to put it safely in the ground.

I tried to portray the little robin as passing away while trying to get a final drink at the frozen bird bath, with his spirit departing, happy now, glowing in warm light.

Bummer!
